2021-2022 Writing Center Fellows and Math Tutors

The upstairs of Aldrich Library has truly become a place to study, connect and support one another’s learning! Math tutoring ramped up significantly this year, especially during office hours as several tutors forged partnerships with individual middle school students, meeting them once or twice a week for the entire school year. Every weekday at 1:30, at least a dozen students could be found working practice problems. These pairs really built a valuable rapport, and the tutors showed tremendous leadership and professionalism.

A special thank you to the senior math tutors for their service this year: Laura Gboloo, Ryan Asefi, Alexa Ryon Bennett, Chloe Carmouche, Justin Dynes, Davis Eglin, Joshua Gregoire, Molly King, Shuhei Niwano, Analise Hyde, Emma Collier, Reagan Kyle, Arya Patel and Kaydence White

Writing Center workshop

Writing Fellow Carter McLean hosted a personal narrative writing Waffle Workshop.

Writing support was vast, as well, and included work with 9th graders on research paper outlines and drafts, World History DBQs, 7th grade fiction writing, 8th grade personal narratives, integrating evidence and discussion into literary analyses, and a host of other papers and assignments.

Fellows also forged a new creative partnership with Yearbook whose theme this year is “In Our Own Words.” Fellows wrote short reflections for many of the spreads and helped identify other writers on campus to be published, too. For a group dedicated to helping others find their clearest and most powerful voice, it was exciting to give the Fellows the opportunity to publish their thoughts in the 2021-2022 yearbook!

Seniors Emily Berg and Arya Patel led the charge with the student literary magazine "Troubadour" and planned a number of contests and workshops that helped encourage student writing throughout the year. Carter McLean hosted a personal narrative writing Waffle Workshop in October; Avery Kyle’s workshop on planning essays featured a pizza lunch; Ella Chapman, Glynes Hill, Isabella Civello and Avery Kyle led their audience through a number of creative writing activities, providing heart-shaped waffles just before Valentine’s day; and Sophia Horridge, Scott McAdams and Carter McLean hosted a flash fiction workshop where participants created a short creative piece on the spot. Student writers from all grade levels bravely submitted their work to "Troubadour" throughout the year, and you will be able to enjoy their writing in the upcoming issue hitting inboxes soon!

And finally, five Writing Fellows represented Episcopal at the annual Secondary Schools Writing Center Association conference! These students earned accepted conference proposals, and crafted original, compelling presentations for writing tutors and faculty around the country. Ella Chapman, Isabella Civello and Glynes Hill presented their session, "Past Writing and Present Self: The Journey of Revision to Enforce Long-Term Skills" to a large audience, many of whom said they’d like to borrow our infamous Waffle Workshop model! Joey Roth and Kathy Hu first polled their Writing Fellow peers and revised our center’s mission statement before presenting their findings in a session called "A Student-Led Self-Study: Understanding Our Center's Evolution by Revising Our Mission.” These students worked diligently and professionally throughout the fall and winter to pull off incredible presentations! Additionally, Library Director, Tiffany Whitehead, and I presented a session called “Find Your People: Strategic Partnerships with Teachers & Leaders in your School” and shared the many collaborations we’ve designed with teachers. 

Thank you to Lisa Pritchard, who supported the Writing Center this year, specifically helping make our online systems and data tracking more efficient! Finally, we send our congratulations and farewell to the seventeen graduating Writing Fellows, many of whom have tutored for three solid years, and some who have also tutored other subjects. Your ability to connect with others and share feedback in a productive way will be a skill you can use for years to come. We thank you for serving the student community!

Skyler Adams (2019-2022) – A session with Skyler is always honest, professional and thorough; he has the ability to be approachable yet direct with his clients!

Catherine Barney

Catherine Barney (2019-2022) – Every client will likely leave their session with Catherine with a plethora of notes! She is a Fellow who listens intently to her clients and helps them map out the paper ahead.

Emily Berg

Emily Berg (2019-2022) – Not only has Emily served individual writers and classes for the past three years, she has co-led the literary magazine, Troubadour, hosting contests and running staff meetings like a true pro!

Chloe Carmouche

Chloe Carmouche (2021-2022) – As a seasoned math tutor and new Writing Fellow this year, Chloe has brought a fresh eye to her clients’ work!

Davis Eglin

Davis Eglin (2019-2022) – Davis has been an asset to individual students, and has also worked closely with entire classes that have come to visit us. His biggest claim to fame is judging the 7th grade poetry slam!

Alex Engstrom

Alex Engstrom (2020-2022) – Alex believes that every person has a story that should be told! He has valued helping students get their ideas out into the world in productive ways.

Ruby Friloux

Ruby Friloux (2019-2022) – Ruby is one of the most thorough tutors! She gives such care and consideration to every sentence a student writes, and they leave feeling quite supported.

Laura Gboloo

Laura Gboloo (2019-2022) – Laura can empathize with where her clients are, even down to the concept they are writing about! She recalls and shares helpful advice from when she learned a specific writing skill as she helps her clients discover helpful revisions.

Sarah Griffith

Sarah Griffith (2020-2022) – Sarah is the queen of questions! She so thoughtfully guides each writer to consider the choices they’ve made, their impact, and ways to strengthen their prose.

Cailyn Jordan

Cailyn Jordan (2021-2022) – As a new Fellow this year, Cailyn brought a kind and approachable style to her sessions. Each client felt welcomed and safe to share their ideas!

Molly King

Molly King (2019-2022) – Not only has Molly served as a very effective Writing Fellow for three years, she tutored extensively in Math this year, high-fiving her client as she mastered tricky skills!

Sara Morgan

Sara Morgan (2019-2022) – Sara is the master of the praise-sandwich, never failing to help a writer see the value of their current piece before guiding them toward helpful revisions.

Lizzie Oliver

Lizzie Oliver (2020-2022) – Lizzie is a Fellow who takes her time with each client, asking thoughtful questions and ensuring each writer is well supported. As the sole Writing Fellow in Period 1 this semester, Lizzie was quite generous with her time!

Arya Patel

Arya Patel (2019-2022) – Arya has likely tutored every subject at one point or another in addition to her work as a Writing Fellow! She is the co-Editor-in-Chief of Troubadour and has worked tirelessly to promote writing campus-wide this year.

Lucy Pellegrin

Lucy Pellegrin (2019-2022) – Lucy, a natural teacher, brings the energy to each appointment! She is easy to talk to, relatable and offers clear advice to each student writer.

Soledad Robins

Soledad Robins (2020-2022) – Soledad is a writer who knows the power of revising over time in order to share ideas clearly and effectively. She helps her clients understand the power of their own voice!

Caroline Wilcox

Caroline Wilcox (2019-2022) – Caroline begins each session with a big smile and keeps her enthusiasm up the entire time! She shows writers that their work is important and that their ideas matter.

 

Katie Sutcliffe

Katie Sutcliffe joined Episcopal in 2011 and is currently the Director of the Writing Center and Thesis Program, as well as the co-creator of LAUNCH, Episcopal’s annual TEDx-style student-planned and executed showcase of ideas and projects. Katie holds a Bachelor of Arts in English (Writing) from DePauw University, an MFA in Creative Nonfiction Writing from the University of Pittsburgh and was a 2005 Teach For America corps member. Katie currently serves as the Southeast Representative for the Secondary Schools Writing Center Association Board. She has taught English and writing courses for middle and high school students, gifted students and even continuing-education adults. She’s passionate about research and writing that have practical implications for understanding and addressing real world challenges.
