Buy Tickets Now for "Matilda Jr."
November 3rd, 2022
Episcopal’s presentation of “Matilda Jr.” has it all! Lower and Middle School actors will ride scooters, stand on desks, walk a balance beam, sing and dance, dance, dance. Theater Production Director Lily McGill says students are preparing well for the production, which opens November 14th on the Visual & Performing Arts Center stage. “I’m proud of what we’ve done so far,” she says.
Fun Fantasy Elements Abound!
McGill says “Matilda Jr.” has a plethora of fun fantasy elements and effects. The show requires McGill and Visual & Performing Arts Director Louis Gagliano to tap into their creativity and imagination to bring the show to life. Unlike most Episcopal theater productions, the “Matilda Jr.” set will be moved and adjusted throughout the performances. With so much on and off the stage, McGill will rely on a team of Upper School crew members to assist.
Based on the book by Roald Dahl, “Matilda Jr.” tells the story of Matilda, a young girl with telekinetic powers. McGill says Matilda and her schoolmates present a worst-case scenario of school life where teachers are unkind and students must stand up for one another. “At its core, it’s about children having some agency,” says McGill. “It’s a good versus evil and good wins story.” McGill enjoys seeing the students’ reactions to songs like “When I Grow Up” and says it’s rewarding to see the young actors at their best.
Collaboration and Casting
“Matilda Jr.” is a dance heavy production. Episcopal dance teacher Christine Chrest has developed choreography to visually tell the story. McGill says most of the young actors who play Matilda’s classmates haven’t taken dance, but they are up for the challenge. McGill is also collaborating with Lower School music teacher Jordan Tupper. Tupper is helping students with the musical numbers and provides a familiar face for the Lower School actors.
As is the custom, numerous roles are double cast. McGill says this allows more students the opportunity to develop their acting skills and get a taste of theater.

What’s next for Episcopal theater?
McGill’s first semester at Episcopal has been quite busy, and she plans to maintain that momentum moving forward. Upper School students are preparing for the Louisiana Thespians Festival in January. In addition, Upper School students will present the musical “Anything Goes” this spring. Auditions begin December 3rd.
