Students Bring History to Life with Dead Patriots Party
September 7th, 2023
Alexander Hamilton, George Washington, John Hancock and other notable historical figures held a meeting recently in Aldrich Library. Upper School American History students donned costumes and wigs to play the parts during Episcopal’s first Dead Patriots Party.
The history assignment had a little of everything. “Putting yourself in the shoes of historic people is the best way to learn about them,” says history teacher Adam Rowe. “Plus, students had to write a short autobiography from their perspective as well. So they researched and then had to figure out the personality of their person.”
The students appreciated the experience. “It was fun,” says sophomore Ella Brien. “It was unlike anything I’ve ever done.” Ella used her dad’s jacket, a wig and glasses to transform into Ben Franklin. Meanwhile, classmate Jeremy Mitchell became John Hancock with the help of a suit jacket and baby powder. Jeremy says the experience was “really fun and engaging.” Both students felt they learned more by bringing history to life than they would have from simply reading a textbook.
The Dead Patriots Party highlights the spirit of learning, collaboration and creativity that are the hallmarks of an Episcopal education. What a great way to make learning fun! #spiritofepiscopal
