Fourth Graders Show Off Creativity and Problem-Solving Skills at Annual Cardboard Arcade
January 18th, 2024
The annual Fourth Grade Cardboard Arcade has taken over the QUEST Center in Foster Hall! Students used inspiration from a science lesson on electricity and the innovation of a nine year old boy named Caine to create fantastic games from common objects, like duct tape, boxes, pool noodles, circuits and packing peanuts. Visitors to this year’s arcade have the opportunity to play games like MLB Sluggers, Chicken Ball, Sky Ball, Honey Mash and Hoopla. Swifties loved the Taylor Swift World Tour.
Students gain a variety of life skills by creating arcade games. They learn to use iMovie to create a commercial and use LED lights, music and simple machines to engage players. Students also hone their problem-solving skills as it requires considerable trial and error to get everything just right. Another important aspect of the arcade experience is working with your teammate to create something new. Loren and Lily, the creators of the Taylor Swift experience, said getting to work together and share ideas was the best part of the lesson. The hard work certainly pays off, as students are delighted to have classmates and families play their creations.
It’s amazing what fourth graders can do!
