How does a river change the land? Ever wonder how erosion happens? Fifth graders at Episcopal are using the new Stream Table and materials, funded through the 2015 Parents’ Guild Wish List, to create and witness natural geological processes that are too slow to experience in reality.
Through the use of the Stream Table, the students are able to observe the erosion caused by streams, waterfalls and the wave action of the ocean. Understanding this is the first step to helping find a solution to our problem of disappearing coast lines.
The students are also experimenting with the water system and flow rate, and as the year goes on will study other curriculum units about rocks, weather and stream dynamics. These experiences are giving our students the opportunity to explore the nature of scientific inquiry right in the classroom.
Thank you to the Parents’ Guild!
