Tops in Math
Seventh grader Autumn Reynolds scored in the top five percent nationally on the AMC 8 middle school math exam. The American Mathematics Competitions 8 (AMC 8) exam is 25 questions in length and covers topics such as probability, estimation and spatial visualization. According to the Mathematical Association of America, tests such as the AMC 8 are offered to inspire students to become lifelong learners of mathematics.

Reynolds is a member of the Episcopal Middle School Math Team and has earned honorable mention in Algebra I and Pre-Algebra at regional high school math tournaments this school year. She was also a member of the Algebra I team that finished second place at the Episcopal math tournament in November.

On Saturday, January 12th Episcopal placed 1st in Division 2 at the Catholic High Mu Alpha Theta math tournament. The tournament was attended by approximately 700 students from 32 schools. Episcopal brought 54 Middle and Upper School students to compete in subjects from Pre-Algebra to Calculus BC. Click here to read the individual results.

Lower School Battle of the Books
Congratulations to the Lower School Battle of the Books winners! Students were quizzed on Wish by Barbara O’Connor, FRAMED! by James Ponti and I Survived the Attack of the Grizzles, 1967 by Lauren Tarshis. Every student participating received a Raising Cane’s gift certificate. As a special treat, members of the six winning teams had the opportunity to travel to Raising Cane’s for a celebratory lunch together.

Essay Contest Winner
What would happen in a world without books? Sophomore Alex Nelson’s essay on this topic earned first prize in the high school student division of the Ernest J. Gaines Award for Literary Excellence. The annual competition, which is sponsored by the Baton Rouge Area Foundation, is open to third through twelfth grade Louisiana students. Winners will be honored at a special reception at the Manship Theatre later this month. In addition to being an Episcopal Writing Fellow, Nelson is also a member of Mu Alpha Theta and a math tutor.

Career High!
Freshman Izzy Besselman scored a career high 45 points in the Episcopal basketball team’s recent win against The Church Academy. In addition to playing basketball, Izzy also plays volleyball and competes in track and field.

National Rider
Junior Mackenzie Robards was selected to attend the U.S. Hunter Jumper Association Gold Star Clinic-East Coast. Robards was one of 21 athletes chosen to attend the four-day intensive in West Palm Beach, Florida. According to the USHJA, riders were chosen based on individual medals earned at 2018 USHJA Zone Jumper Team Championships or as a wildcard participant. The experience included instruction on horsemanship, stable management and mounted instruction.
​Robards has been competing in national competitions for ten years. Her horse Cirona and trainer Janet Talmadge joined her at the recent clinic.

BroadwayWorld Honorees
Episcopal’s theater duo Louis and Paige Gagliano recently earned recognition in the 2018 BroadwayWorld New Orleans Awards. Paige earned Best Direction of a Play (local) for her role as the director of Theatre Baton Rouge’s Gideon’s Knot. Louis earned Best Lighting Design for his role as lighting director for Theatre Baton Rouge’s Cabaret.
