Yale Young Global Scholar

Sophomore Katherine Scarton has an exciting summer ahead of her. Katherine was selected to participate in the biological and biomedical science section of the Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS) program. According to YYGS, the program’s mission is to empower the next generation of leaders by building a global community and designing interdisciplinary programs that foster intellectual curiosity, deepen understanding and inspire creative action across all borders. YYGS admission is competitive and mirrors the college admissions process with students required to submit an application, essay and references. Only 24% of applicants for last year's summer program were accepted for all six sessions. During the two week session, participants attend large lectures and small seminars presented by Yale University faculty and have the opportunity to experience life on Yale’s campus.

Each year, the Episcopal art teachers select artwork from a rising fifth grader, a rising eighth grader and a graduating senior to add to the school’s permanent student art exhibit. The exhibit is a celebration of the individual student contributions to Episcopal and the school’s commitment to arts education.

Episcopal Artists on Display at Baton Rouge Gallery

Five Episcopal AP art students are sharing their work with the Baton Rouge community. Caitlin Davis, Sophia Graves, Claire Hook, Katie Knight and Ian Sabolik were selected to participate in "The Real-Life Experience" Juried High School Exhibition. In addition, Katie Knight was selected to apply for the Paul A. Dufour & Julia Dufour Richardson Scholarship. The scholarship awards high school students an opportunity for private mentorship from a local artist. Katie’s work entitled “Allyson” also earned honorable mention. According to the Gallery website, the exhibition features over 50 works of original art produced by students from East Baton Rouge public and private high schools. More than 240 works were submitted for inclusion in the exhibition. The exhibition is on display from now until April 25th.

Race and the Arts: Addressing the Lack of Representation in Classical Art Forms by Lauren Smith
As a classical musician herself, Lauren uses her own experience as a launching point to explore the historical and cultural forces that stifle the diversity within classical arts. She argues that art, which can push boundaries and spark social progress, should highlight a myriad of creators and artists from all backgrounds and experiences.

All Guts, No Glory by Ethan Wax
Using Evil Dead II, the film that instigated the Splatstick genre, Ethan's presentation explains the possibilities of this niche genre. He discusses the challenges of splatter horror film, the redeeming qualities of slapstick comedy and why the merging of the two has created something unique and unexpected.
