Congratulations to the 2016-2017 Newton Upper School Distinguished Faculty award recipients Karin deGravelles,
Sara Fenske and Sergio Ramos
.

Episcopal is extremely honored to have each of you as talented and thriving members of Episcopal’s faculty. You are true gifts to our students, our community and we are pleased that you have been chosen for this recognition.

About The Newton Upper School Distinguished Faculty award
Patty and Carl Newton established the Newton Upper School Distinguished Faculty award four years ago because they believe that faculty can make a tremendous difference in the lives of Episcopal students.  Each year, three Newton Upper School Distinguished Faculty Scholarships are awarded for professional development opportunities of the recipients choice.

Karin deGravelles is in her sixth year of teaching English in the Upper School at Episcopal.  She earned her B.A. in English (literature) from Reed College, her M.A. in English (rhetoric and composition) and Ph.D. in education from Louisiana State University, concentrating in secondary English and curriculum theory.  Before coming to Episcopal, she taught in the University Writing Program and managed the LA-STEM Research Scholars Program at LSU.  She is passionate about supporting student writers, and she coaches the poetry slam team and sponsors Episcopal’s online literary magazine, Troubadour.

Sara Fenske pursued a career in education because of her love of science and desire to share that passion with others. A member of the science faculty at Episcopal, she teaches various levels of biology and science research methods in the upper school. Previously, she was the science department chair and taught at Linden Hall in Pennsylvania. She has a bachelor of science degree in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and a PhD in Biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA.

Sergio Ramos is in his twelfth year of teaching Spanish at Episcopal. Originally from the Canary Islands, Spain, he earned his B.A. in English Philology from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and his M.A. in Education from the Complutense University of Madrid. He is passionate about expanding students’ cultural experience outside the classroom through international trips. During his years at Episcopal, Señor Ramos has sponsored trips to the Canary Islands and Costa Rica as well as promoting the students exchange program with Chile.
