Snaps for Poetry Café! 6th grade students delighted an audience of classmates and parents with a poetry reading in the Alumni House parlor, which was transformed into a beatnik-inspired coffee house for the occasion.
Following an exploration of fixed form and free verse poetry, students selected one of their original poems to share in addition to one by another author. Students’ compositions were modeled after poems they studied in class, including Nikki Giovanni’s “Knoxville, Tennessee”. Giovanni was a teacher and mentor of Kwame Alexander, who visited the middle and lower schools earlier this semester. The event is held in April, in recognition of National Poetry Month.
