While Social Studies is another distinct part of the Global Studies Department at Episcopal, it covers a wide range of topics. From introducing students to the workings of their government to learning about other cultures and customs, Social Studies has many overlaps with World Travel.

WHO?
You! Anyone can participate in the Spanish Exchange, regardless of background knowledge of the language or the culture. This activity is available to any Episcopal student that has an interest in learning the Spanish language and/or about the Spanish culture.
|
WHAT?
The Spanish exchange allows for you and your family to host a Spanish exchange student and/or to travel to Spain. Students are free to participate in both of these enriching activities, or they may simply choose just one of them.
|
WHERE?
In the fall, the Spanish students from Colegio Bristol will come to Episcopal and stay with Episcopal families for the one-week hosting period. Episcopal students have the opportunity to visit Colegio Bristol in Madrid, Spain, for two weeks in the spring.
|
WHEN?
Spanish exchange students stayed with host families from September 17, 2018, to September 23, 2018. And Episcopal students travel to Spain from February 23, 2019, to March 8, 2019 (the second week of this visit is Mardi Gras Break).
|
WHY?
Participating in the Spanish Exchange with Colegio Bristol allows for you to learn more about yourself, your interests, the world around you, and how you are involved in a larger global context. You are also able to teach others about your school, region, and country.

At a Glance: Student Perspectives
Going to Spain was an amazing experience. It helped me make lifelong friends and experience an awesome culture. Through this trip, I chose my thesis topic. I also know that I want to continue studying Spanish in college. This exchange program broadened my world view and strengthened my academics.
— Mary Emerson Owen (Class of 2018), Trip Participant
Deciding to go to Spain was one of the best decisions I’ve made! I was immersed in the Spanish culture and my Spanish tremendously! Learning Spanish in the classroom and looking at pictures is so different than actually being in Spain and seeing how what you learned applies to everyday conversations! I made many fond memories that I will cherish for a long time.
— Hayley Gregoire (Class of 2020), Trip Participant
I fell in love when I first went to Madrid so I had to go back! Learning about the culture and history while being fully immersed was such a great experience. I plan to visit Spain again when I am in college.
— Cali Sabolik (Class of 2018), Trip Participant
Being immersed in the Spanish culture is eye-opening. Seeing Madrid and the surrounding areas is breathtaking, but living with a family that truly lets you experience the “real” Spain. I will forever be grateful for “Mi Familia” in Spain who opened the doors to me and treated me like one of their own.
— Ms. Nancy Calloway, Chaperone

Traveling to Chile was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. I never felt homesick, and the people were very welcoming. I would definitely recommend going to Chile.
— Riley Carmouche (Class of 2020), Trip Participant
I have hosted two Chilean students and have traveled to Chile three times. After hosting my first student, I instantly became intrigued by the culture, and I made a lifelong friend. Going to Chile was one of the most amazing experiences that I have had in my life, and I fell in love with the friendly environment and beautiful surroundings. Chile has become like a second home to me, and I am grateful to have three Chilean families that I will have lifetime connections with. I loved my experiences and travels to Chile so much that I went back a second time with the school, and this past summer, I returned for a third time with my mom and my brother so that I could share some of the experiences that I have had with them. My experiences with both hosting and traveling have excelled my Spanish and also my interest in the Spanish language and culture.
— Maia Adams (Class of 2020), Trip Participant
