Let the Games Begin!

Let the Games Begin!
The Middle School Olympics are underway! This annual tradition is a way for students to engage, connect and work as a team. Each week for five weeks, students participate in challenges such as the Tower Build, Speed Eraser and Bean Bag Toss. Each Friday, teams also compete in trivia contests inspired by the game Jeopardy. Students are quizzed on their knowledge of everything from state birds to popular apps. Ultimately, the gold medal winner will be named before the Easter break.
Middle School Division Head Mark Engstrom points out that academic concepts like building conversational fluency in French or Spanish, solving for variables or refining a thesis statement are key components of the Middle School experience. However, there is much more to be learned. “It’s also important that we learn to work together, win, lose, help a classmate, encourage others, console someone in defeat, etc,” he says. Activities like the Middle School Olympics help students learn these lessons in an engaging format. “The goal of the Middle School Olympics is to inject some fun and healthy competition in the school year so that we can be well rounded. Hopefully, whether we win or lose, the journey was worth it and we can all look back on the fun we had through this experience.”
Sixth Grade Logo Designer
Congratulations to this year’s Middle School Olympics logo designer – sixth grader Billy Henderson. Billy enjoys art and design and was happy to share his talents with classmates. He was thoughtful about his work, intentionally placing the Knight’s head on Baton Rouge to acknowledge the Episcopal/Baton Rouge connection. Engstrom says Billy is a great example for others. “Here is a student living up to the Middle School theme for the year, which is Make a Positive Impact,” he says.
The Middle School Olympics are just one example of faculty and staff creating positive experiences for Episcopal students. These opportunities to connect in fun ways are part of what makes Episcopal such a special place to learn.
