Theatre & Drama

Through improvisation, understanding, and articulation, Episcopal students gain the confidence to stand on the stage in front of their peers and lift their voices so even the person in the back row can hear.  At Episcopal, we see theatre and drama as essential for developing strong communication skills and the ability to understand different points of view.

Students in all grade levels have the opportunity to participate in co-curricular offerings throughout the year and perform in the school's 450-seat proscenium theatre.  Classes are offered in the curriculum from grades 5-12 and focus on improvisation, stage-craft, and exploration of the rich world of dramatic literature. In play production, theatre seminar, and theatre masters seminar classes students rehearse in class to produce a full-length straight play. Technical theatre classes are also offered, providing students the opportunity to work with our full-time technical director to design and build sets, lighting, and sound for productions.

The Black Box

The Charles Lamar Black Box Theatre is home to acting classes for students in grades 6-12.  Filmmaking and acting for the screen is also taught in this truly innovative space. The Black Box Theatre offers a performance space that is easily transformed to provide the audience a uniquely intimate experience. With seating for up to 120, the Charles Lamar Black Box is a performance space for our jazz band’s annual “Jazz Clubbin,” the choir department’s Black Box Concert as well as conventional and avant-garde theatre performances.
