Middle School Parent Newsletter | September 12, 2025

September 12th, 2025 by Anne Dalton

I wrote the following last fall and would like to share it again, along with some updated thoughts:

Your child is desperate for independence while still living in the land of childhood—the true definition of adolescence. There are concrete things we can do to support them! When you pick your middle schooler up today, have them direct you from school to home (or their favorite sweet treat spot! and then home). See if they can do it. So often our student are on their devices while we are driving, they have no idea how to get from A to B! Follow their wrong turns, like taking a longer route or missing a turn, and use this as a teachable moment. Soon enough they will be in the driver's seat and sure, they can use maps to guide them but how much better will they feel about their independence if they just know! Have fun. Take a deep breath. Embrace the giggles and make sure you have a full tank of gas.

Making wrong turns along the way can actually lead to some of the best experiences in life. Trusting the process is essential. While we can still reach our destinations despite detours, these missteps may cost us more gas and time. However, it’s during these moments that we often uncover amazing lessons and meet incredible people. Embracing the unexpected can enrich our journey, teaching us resilience and adaptability, ultimately leading to remarkable growth. Let’s appreciate both the planned routes and the spontaneous adventures that come our way, ensuring our children witness us embrace paths we might not have originally intended!

ATTENDANCE:

Please remember that all absences must be reported through PowerSchool.

Looking ahead into the semester, please also know that we will be emphasizing our attendance policy this year; students who miss more than four sessions of any one class will be required to make up the minutes.  This is to comply with Louisiana state law.  You may hear this policy referred to as “No More Than Four” and, while there are some exceptions for school-sanctioned absences and for unavoidable absences (hospitalizations, natural disasters, etc), both reported and unreported absences count towards this limit. For more information, please refer to the handbook.
