Building the Bridge to Upper School through Student Mentorship
March 23rd, 2022
Is it difficult to manage a high school schedule and extracurricular activities?
Are there interesting electives to take in high school?
What technology do you need in high school?
Episcopal juniors and seniors recently had the opportunity to dispel a few myths about the high school experience as part of a new mentorship program with eighth graders. The Upper School students answered questions and provided advice for how to get the most out of high school. The discussions will continue once a month in advisory now through April. Middle School counselor Alicia Kelly hopes the time with mentors makes the Upper School transition easier for eighth graders. “The focus is not only learning about our high school but connecting with positive role models who can share helpful tips and guidance related to high school life,” she says.
Learning from Experience
Dressed in Episcopal team hoodies and college sweatshirts, Upper School students spoke from their personal experiences as athletes, actors and scholars. They highlighted that despite the myths about the difficulty of managing academics and extracurricular activities, it can be done easily with thoughtful time management practices. The students emphasized that part of that success is due to the fact that teachers want to help students succeed and are available to provide assistance. They also reminded the Middle School students of the academic support resources available, including the Writing Center, math tutors and faculty office hours.
The seniors and juniors also discussed the rich social life that is a key component of the Upper School experience. As an example, they discussed club participation including clubs like the Fan Club, Science Club and the Grill Cheese Club.
An Opportunity for Leadership
Kelly says there is real value in partnering Upper School students with Middle School students. “The eighth graders are able to see successful upperclassmen as positive role models and leaders so that they can see models of what they may become,” she says. “The junior and senior students have a chance to serve in a leadership role and give back to their community. This mentoring activity also helps them develop communication skills and social skills.”
The Upper/Middle School student mentorship program showcases the benefits of a PreK – 12th grade school environment. Activities like this, the popular Senior Buddies program and more enhance the sense of community that makes Episcopal a special place. Kelly hopes the mentorship program prepares students for Upper School and helps them feel connected to their classmates. “It’s about building bridges between our divisions so we can do the best for all our students,” she says.
