An Easter Message from Father Skully
April 6th, 2023

This is a Holy time. And no, it’s not just because it’s Spring Break. It is Easter. It is also Passover and Ramadan. For many of us, for many reasons, it is indeed a Holy time. In Easter, as in other traditions, we remember the past, in order to give meaning to the present, so that we might improve our future, the future of our communities, and the future of the world.
In the days leading up to Easter, we walk with Jesus and his disciples. We are on the journey. We don’t just remember it, we are called to experience it, to live in it, and it’s not always easy or pleasant. But it is necessary. We have to look back to move forward.
Easter is a joyous celebration, but it comes at a cost. It reminds us that the love that God calls us into is a sacrificial love. It is a love that is willing to give everything-the way God gives his Son, and the way that Jesus gives his life. We celebrate the joy of Easter, but we remember the cost. The story of our past moves us to love others in a new way.
Jesus offers his disciples and us a new commandment, to love others as he has loved us. We’re going to have to step up our game. That’s love at a new level. That’s a love that takes work. When Jesus washes the feet of the disciples, he washed the feet of all of them-the one who would betray him, the one who would deny him, and those who would leave him alone on the cross. To love like that, is indeed a new commandment, but that’s the job.
This is a Holy time. Whatever spiritual journey you are on, embrace it, experience it, and live it. And then celebrate the joy that comes with the love that God shares with us, as we become new creations in God’s love. Have a blessed and joyful rest.
