Dual Sport Athlete TJ Callahan to Compete at Kentucky State University
February 9th, 2024
“I feel like being a two sport athlete is really difficult but if you put your mind to it and stay focused anything is possible.” TJ Callahan ’24
Surrounded by family and friends, TJ Callahan made the official announcement that he will compete for Kentucky State University in both basketball and football. “You don’t see two-sport athletes very often,” Athletic Director Randy Richard told the gathered crowd. However, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that TJ is the athlete to make that dream a reality. “He has no quit in him,” said Richard. “He does fight for what he wants.”
TJ says Kentucky State is the right school for him because of Coaches Foley and Huggins. “I feel like I built a strong connection with my future coaches, which pushed me towards KSU,” TJ says. While competing on the field and court, TJ plans to also pursue a degree in business agriculture.
A Difference Maker
TJ has certainly made a difference as a Knight. Head basketball coach Ben Young said TJ’s talent on the court gets the attention of opposing teams. “He gets everyone’s best shot,” he said. Young reflected on TJ’s performance against 5A Denham Springs High School and the impact he had for the team. When it comes to TJ’s future with the Thorobreds, Young says the sky’s the limit as far as what he can accomplish at the next level. Head football coach Travis Bourgeois has similar praise for TJ. “I’m really proud,” he said during the announcement. “Keep that work ethic going and be the difference maker.”
Basketball has been a part of TJ’s life since he was very young. During his sophomore year, he also began playing football and thus became the dual-sport athlete he is today. Competing in two sports can be challenging, but TJ is up for it. He encourages classmates with similar goals to “take those risks which take you out of your comfort zone. Always believe in yourself.”
When TJ is not competing in sports, he also makes a difference as a member of the Episcopal African Heritage Club.
It will be exciting to see the positive impact TJ will have at the next level. Please join us in congratulating him on this tremendous accomplishment.
