Assistant Lower School Head

The Episcopal School of Baton Rouge seeks an Assistant Lower School Head for the 2026-2027 academic year. The Assistant Lower School Head role is integral to the Lower School, serving over 360 PreK-3 through 5th-grade students. Episcopal’s Lower School is a faculty and staff community that embraces the whole-child educational philosophy. This individual will serve the entire Lower School, with a particular focus on the Early Childhood program. Therefore, an ideal candidate is one with experience teaching and serving students in the early childhood age range. This position is a twelve-month full-time position with an annual renewal. The position begins on July 1st of each year.

Description of School

Episcopal School of Baton Rouge, a college preparatory educational community of approximately 950 students and approximately 170 professionals, includes grades PreK-3 through 12 that embraces the whole-child educational philosophy. General Duties

 
● Support a strong sense of belonging in the Lower School community.
● Serve as a Lower School Instructional coach.
● Support Lower School student growth and development when missteps occur; communicate with teachers, parents, the Lower School Counselor, and the Lower School Head.
● Serve as a member of the Lower School Learning Support Services team.
● Coordinate Lower School scheduling.
● Help track attendance and work with families to avoid excessive absences.
● Assist with the Lower School admission process and screening of applicants.
● Support planning for and help facilitate Lower School duties, meetings, and events.
● Attend and help facilitate a variety of Lower School and all-school meetings.
● Help develop and implement professional development for faculty; advise them on potential opportunities.
● Review progress reports and other communications with the Lower School community.
● Collaborate with the Lower School Head and all Lower School faculty and staff to support and develop the Lower School program.
 

Requirements

Personal and Professional Characteristics and Experiences

● A Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or Elementary Education, and a Master’s Degree in a related field are required.
● At least five years of teaching experience, preferably in an elementary education classroom.
● Experience and a deep understanding of child development.
● Experience working and communicating with parents.
● Embraces the whole child educational philosophy.
● Understands the developmental characteristics of Lower School students and the importance of nurturing children's social-emotional development.
● Demonstrates strong cultural competency skills and an enthusiasm for celebrating diversity, inclusivity, and belonging.
● Demonstrates sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of community members' diverse backgrounds, with a continuous focus on healthy relationship-building.
● Results-driven, task-oriented, collaborative spirit when working with colleagues.
● Classroom management skills that promote a positive classroom environment.
● Familiarity with play-based learning and Responsive Classroom.
● Exceptional organizational skills, ability to juggle many responsibilities, and adaptability to change.
● Communicates clearly and with appropriate empathy to students, parents, and colleagues.
● Ability to react and adjust quickly to changing conditions and to come up with practical ideas for addressing them.
● Experience addressing a wide variety of situations in a professional and solution-oriented manner.
