Upper School Dean of Student Life

The Episcopal School of Baton Rouge seeks an Upper School Dean of Student Life for the 2026-2027 academic year to work with 9th-12th grade students. The Upper School Dean of Student Life is an integral part of the Upper School administrative team, working with students, parents, teachers, and administrators to support students in their academic, social, and emotional growth. This role also collaborates cross-divisionally to support community initiatives. This position is a twelve-month full-time position with annual renewal and begins on July 1st of each year.

Description of School

Episcopal School of Baton Rouge, a college preparatory educational community of approximately 950 students and approximately 170 professionals, includes grades PreK-3 through 12 that embraces the whole-child educational philosophy. General Duties

● Support a strong sense of belonging in the Upper School community.
● Work with faculty class sponsors and administrators to develop and oversee student activities such as student clubs, homecoming activities, dances, and pep rallies, as well as all-school and end-of-year senior events.
● Collaborate with the Upper School Counselor and the Upper School Division Head to develop student programming to meet student needs. These may include social and emotional wellness programming, advisory programming, and guest speakers.
● Serve as leader within the Upper School grade-level teams, working with faculty and administrators to develop and follow up on student interventions.
● Partner with the Middle School Dean of Student Life, Division Counselors, and Assistant Lower School Head on cross-divisional student programming and student supervision during morning and afternoon carpool.
● Provide a calming influence at student activities such as games, assemblies, and dances.
● Be a visible presence in student areas on campus.
● Work with students and families to adhere to the attendance policies, including following up on excessive tardies, absences, and patterns of absences with appropriate conversations and consequences.
● Address missteps and student discipline with appropriate and timely responses, using a variety of disciplinary consequences.
● Communicate regarding student behavior and needs with parents and teachers.
● Serve as the key communicator from administration to students.
● Collaborate with other administrators to update the Episcopal Student and Parent Handbook annually.
● Participate regularly in growth-oriented educational opportunities; remain current in relevant educational practices.
● Attend scheduled faculty/division/department meetings.
● Perform additional duties assigned including, but not limited to, supervising students during community times, breaks, lunchtime, and morning and/or afternoon carpool.

Requirements

Personal and Professional Characteristics and Experiences

● A bachelor's degree and at least five years of experience as an Upper School educator are required.
● Ability to build positive relationships with all students and to create a warm and welcoming office environment.
● Has strong cultural competency skills and an enthusiasm for celebrating diversity, inclusivity, and belonging.
● Demonstrates sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of the diverse backgrounds of community members with a continuous focus on healthy relationship building.
● Exhibits excellent situational awareness and judgment.
● Exceptional organizational skills, ability to juggle many responsibilities, and adaptability to change.
● Experience providing learning support in Upper School is preferred.
● Results-driven and task-oriented collaborative spirit when working with colleagues.
● Communicates clearly and with appropriate empathy to students, parents, and colleagues.
● Ability to react and adjust quickly to changing conditions and to come up with practical ideas for addressing them.
● Experience addressing a wide variety of situations in a professional and solution-oriented manner.
● Appreciation for and understanding of the developmental characteristics of this age group.
● Embraces the whole-child educational philosophy and puts students first.
