Board games, floating cities and new robots. It’s just another day in the QUEST Center in Foster Hall! Before the break, Episcopal students were busy with project work throughout the facility, which is dedicated to Lower and Middle School exploration and innovation. The projects did not disappoint.

Fourth Grade Board Games Test National Park Knowledge

The traditional National Park project-based learning unit featured an innovative new twist this year. After studying landforms, animals and the climates of America’s parks, students created board games based on what they learned. The culmination of the unit featured a fun day of twirling cardboard spinners, rolling dice and winning game “cash.” Along the way, students, families and friends answered questions about the parks to showcase their knowledge.

Fifth Grade Floating Cities

The senior Lower School students wrapped up a study on Louisiana’s coastline with a thought-provoking assignment. After discussing everything from the impacts of storm surge, saltwater intrusion and coastal erosion, students imagined a world where cities would deal with these challenges by floating.

Using recycled materials, students created prototypes for aquatic cities complete with locks, propellors, disaster detectors and even desalination systems. The colorful creations showcased the creativity of young students and the thoughtfulness of future pioneers.

Introducing the Sphero Robot!

Thanks to a donation from the Episcopal Parents’ Guild, members of the Robotics Club have new technology to explore. Students recently got their hands on the QUEST Center’s Sphero robots. Center Coordinator Dr. Elizabeth Lewis says the little bots make lights, sounds and can even go underwater. Sixth graders were challenged to program their Sphero to go near a minotaur without touching it and safely escape. Dr. Lewis says the experience required students to use their critical thinking, problem solving, logic and resilience skills. As far as the students are concerned, it was simply fun.

Episcopal faculty are experts in deploying engaging, hands-on experiences for students. The resources available in the QUEST Center make the quest for meaningful learning easier. We are sure there are many more adventures to be had for the second half of the school year!
