What's Your Bright Idea?
May 2nd, 2023

Episcopal has a long history of educating future entrepreneurs, and that tradition continues through the Upper School Economics Theory & Business Design course. Recently, teacher Anita Gilmore issued an experiential challenge that required students to research and plan a unique business. After all the studying and number crunching, students pitched their business plans to a group of professionals who awarded prizes for top marks.
The Field House classroom was filled to capacity as teams of students presented their concepts. Students shared the inspiration for their businesses, logistical details and the start-up money needed to make their dreams a reality. Ideas ranged from an online gambling website and split-track skating rink to a nationwide bullet train and an app to connect diabetics. Ultimately, the judges recognized the following student business proposals:
1st – Anna Uffman and Anna Katherine Harrell – Hotline Bling
2nd – Cam Butler and James Thom VI – Washers and Cutters
3rd – Avery Kyle and Alexandra Streuli – Helping Hands Babysitting app

For Gilmore, the experience of seeing her students shine was extremely rewarding. “My students’ presentations far exceeded my expectations,” she says. “It’s good to know that all of our hard work wasn’t in vain.”
The inaugural business pitch competition was a team effort showcasing the strength of the Episcopal community. Members of the alumni community, IT team and food services staff helped make the event a success. In addition, Global and Social Studies Department faculty supported students and Gilmore in their journey. The panel of judges, including Randy McGee, Amy Starnes, Olivia Elliott, Danese Piper and Carl Newton, offered expertise, time and credibility to the experience.
Thank you to everyone who supported the students and made the competition a success, and congratulations to these future entrepreneurs!
