A Tradition of Faith and Community: The Fourth Grade Bible Blessing
September 11th, 2025

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. Psalm 119:105
A community celebrates milestones together, and that’s just what Lower School students, teachers and families recently did. During Lower School Chapel, PreK-4 through fifth grade students watched as Father Patrick Edwards blessed the new fourth grade Bibles. Afterward, each fourth grade student received a Bible with their name written inside and the verse above featured on the first page.
Lower School religion teacher Jenny Koenig says this beloved tradition marks the beginning of upper elementary school for these students. “It’s a sign that they’re moving on from the beginner Bible,” she says.

The annual Bible blessing is one of Koenig’s favorite traditions. “I love the tradition that we give each student a Bible on the cusp of them becoming the leaders of Lower School,” she says. She says that after the chapel service, students proudly walk their Bibles back to the religion classroom, where they will be used throughout the school year. Now that students have their own Bible, they can read aloud together as a class and follow along as Koenig shares stories and lessons.
The new Bibles will be a part of the students’ lives for the rest of their Lower School journey. As a community, they will continue to learn together as they prepare to lead Lower School next year. What a great way to build community!
