Community Life at an Episcopal School
October 8th, 2025

Each October, two-legged and four-legged creatures gather on the Episcopal front lawn for the annual Blessing of the Animals. This tradition, in honor of the Feast of Francis of Assisi, is always a special occasion as students and families bring their furry friends to campus. In the past, the event has drawn large crowds of pet dogs, cats, lizards, fish and even a horse. The Blessing of the Animals is a beloved community tradition at an Episcopal school and showcases the intentional integration of our Episcopal identity within those schools.
According to the National Association of Episcopal Schools (NAES), “Episcopal school traditions and community life demonstrate a commitment to honor, celebrate, and worship God in Christ as the center of life and to support all people, regardless of origin, ability, or religion. Students are grounded in the school’s Episcopal identity through community life.” The use of Episcopal liturgies on regularly scheduled or special occasions, including Blessing of the Animals, Lessons and Carols, Baccalaureate and Graduation, highlights the school’s identity.
That Episcopal identity is felt throughout our community. According to the NAES, “worship is one of the most universal and effective expressions of Episcopal identity and community life.” NAES also highlights that Episcopal communities promote the benefits of a pluralistic school. “Episcopal schools have long understood that multiple voices and perspectives are necessary for sound learning and wise decision making. To this end, Episcopal schools strive to be inclusive communities that promote open and reasoned dialogue that breaks down barriers and promotes human understanding. The school works actively at all levels of the organization and with all constituents to strengthen inter-personal and cross-cultural understanding across racial, religious, cultural, and socio-economic, and other divides.”
Our community comes together in worship, in the classroom and in support of our student athletes and artists. Efforts such as the kindergarten/senior buddy program, the eighth grade/ninth grade mentorship program or even peer tutoring in the Academic Resource Center, foster a sense of community across divisions and grades. That sense of community also extends to our families, friends and alumni who pack the stands or theater in support of student activities. Each year, the entire student body lines the walkways to wish the newest graduating class well. The emotions, cheers and love of this occasion point to the fact that Episcopal students are known, valued and connected, and our community is strong.
