Social Justice at an Episcopal School
October 8th, 2025

In a neighborhood in Baton Rouge, the sounds of hammers and saws ring out as a group of Episcopal students and volunteers construct what will soon be a family’s forever home. Throughout the year, students stock and organize supplies in a local food bank. Even Lower School students find ways to make the world a better place by writing letters to hospital patients or collecting books for area newborns. Service learning comes in a variety of forms, but hopefully, Episcopal students leave these experiences with the same feeling – we’re all in this together.
According to the National Association of Episcopal Schools (NAES), Episcopal schools seek to thoughtfully balance their core identity as Christian institutions with an open and genuine hospitality that welcomes many voices and perspectives. “Grounded in Jewish tradition and the teachings of Jesus, the early church broadened the horizons of inclusivity to embrace the whole human family, especially the poor, the marginalized, and the stranger. Episcopal schools strive to live fully into Christ’s gospel call such that ‘barriers which divide us may crumble, suspicions disappear, and hatreds cease; that our divisions being healed, we may live in justice and peace.”
NAES points out that “Episcopal schools take seriously their calling to ‘strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being.’” The organization goes on to say that, “The school works actively at all levels of the organization and with all constituents to strengthen inter-personal and cross-cultural understanding across racial, religious, cultural, socio-economic, and other divides.” In addition, “Episcopal schools seek to cultivate lives of meaning, purpose, and service. Therefore, sustained, meaningful, and transformational service to others is a fundamental part of an Episcopal education.”
NAES highlights that, “Students learn best when they are known, valued, connected, and safe. Episcopal schools create and sustain a school culture that advances the dignity and well-being of each person and promotes a genuine sense of belonging. Adults model openness to new ideas and perspectives, respectful civil discourse, and reasoned dialogue as ways to increase interpersonal understanding and resolve conflicts.”
By encouraging students to respect the dignity of all, be open to new ideas and deploy civil discourse, Episcopal schools prepare the next generation to lead ethically in an ever-evolving, interconnected world.
