Episcopal School of Baton Rouge social studies teacher Julie Weaver was one of only 13 educators chosen by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum to participate in the 2025-2026 Museum Teacher Fellowship Program. Weaver was chosen for her knowledge of Holocaust history, successful teaching experience and participation in community and professional organizations and events.

Weaver participated in the Pines, Sarna, Statfeld Summer Institute for the Museum Teacher Fellowship Program, held at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum this summer. As part of her fellowship, Weaver will implement a professional development event for educators in the community that shares the museum’s free educational resources.

This school year, Weaver is teaching an Episcopal Upper School course focused on the Holocaust. The course, titled Behind Every Number: The Holocaust through Stories, aims to humanize and memorialize those who perished in the Holocaust through the telling of their stories and to contextualize the Holocaust within US and world history.

“While this area of study is challenging, complex, and disturbing, the importance of learning about the Holocaust cannot be overstated,” says Weaver. “It is important for students to understand the impact that history has on the world we live in today, including the ramifications of prejudice and stereotyping in our daily lives and the difference that the actions of one person can make.”

Weaver hopes to cultivate informed and responsible citizens who understand the dangers of hatred and discrimination in our society. Weaver also teaches an age-appropriate Holocaust unit in her seventh grade class and has taught several Knight School classes on the Holocaust.

Established in 1996, the Museum Teacher Fellowship program at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum develops a national corps of skilled teachers who provide ongoing professional development and share Museum resources in their schools, communities and professional organizations. To date, 470 teachers have completed the program.
