Lower School Goals
The Lower School experience at Episcopal is designed to build a strong foundation for each child—academically, socially, and emotionally. Through purposeful learning, supportive relationships, and a focus on growth, students begin their journey with confidence and curiosity.
Episcopal’s Lower School priorities include strengthening foundational skills, aligning curriculum across grade levels, and supporting both academic and social-emotional growth through thoughtful instruction and ongoing faculty development. The strategies below provide an example of how each strategic plan goal will be achieved in the Lower School. Lower School Chaplain Jenny Koenig ’01 shares what these goals mean for students.
Strategic Goal One: Excellence in Teaching & Learning
The Lower School has undertaken significant work in aligning early literacy and math instruction from PreK-3 through Grade 5. Emphasis is placed on data-informed instruction, phonics and grammar integration, and classroom coaching cycles that support continuous improvement. Faculty professional development includes training in project work and Responsive Classroom, while regular student support meetings ensure attention to social-emotional and academic needs.
Strategic Goal Two: Episcopal Identity & Community
In Lower School, Episcopal Identity is brought to life through intentional social/emotional learning lessons, inclusive morning meetings, and visual representation of diverse cultures in classrooms. Students engage with religious holidays across traditions and participate in grade-specific service learning projects. Weekly chapel services and Toolbox Tuesdays embed shared language around values and empathy. These early experiences foster empathy, awareness, and a foundational understanding of community values that students will carry throughout their time at Episcopal.
Strategic Goal Three: Financial Sustainability
School-wide collaboration is strengthening financial planning across divisions. Teams are working together to align departmental initiatives with budget priorities, seek new revenue opportunities, and build long-term sustainability through data-informed strategies.
The Lower School years set the tone for a child’s entire educational journey. At Episcopal, students begin that journey in an environment where they are supported, challenged, and inspired to grow.
