Parent Experts Help First Graders Make Healthy Choices
September 25th, 2023
The first grade Healthy Selves project-based lesson showcases the Spirit of Episcopal as a range of guest speakers have enthusiastically shared their expertise with these young learners. The annual unit helps students learn to make healthy food choices, the importance of exercise and how to care for their bodies. With the help of parent experts, students learned about everything from heart and lung health to keeping their bones strong and recovering from an injury. In addition, first graders made smoothies in Chemistry Kitchen, practiced yoga in the Visual & Performing Arts Center and visited Fast Food Farms to learn more about healthy foods. For a service learning component, students will partner with the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank to help end the 68 Hours of Hunger. Thank you to everyone who helped make this a meaningful learning opportunity!
The Healthy Selves unit will culminate in the annual Duathlon on Friday, October 6th. Students will bike and run around the Episcopal track. This is always an exciting way to celebrate the completion of a comprehensive lesson. Way to go, first grade!
