Beta Club Service Day Success
February 14th, 2023
This year, Kathy and I decided that it was time for Episcopal to reactivate its Beta Club after about twenty years. The senior class has National Honor Society as an option for a service-oriented club, but we wanted to create a place where people from across Upper School could come together and do service. Each member is required to complete twenty-four hours of meaningful service over the course of two semesters. After scouring the Internet for service opportunities we could present to club members and encourage them to go out and participate in, finding opportunities for our busy members proved more difficult than it sounded. We took a look around our community and asked ourselves where we could create those very opportunities. Upon further inspection, we saw that our own campus had a plethora of work with which teachers needed help.
Last year, Father Skully and the CSL team hosted an on-campus service day that was a roaring success, and we decided that the newly-formed Beta Club should organize one this year. Gathering inspiration from last year’s service tasks, we emailed teachers to have them input any work they needed to be done around their classrooms. We received responses from all school divisions, and after promoting this service event to the club and general Upper School student body, we divided these jobs up amongst volunteers. We assigned locations that were spewed across campus, and we were able to reminisce over our younger days while simultaneously assisting teachers. Over 25 students volunteered this past Sunday, and their efforts made a meaningful difference in eight different areas on campus.
Going back and helping the teachers we’ve had over the years was a reminder of how much they’ve given us and helped us grow, and it was amazing to see everyone come together and give back to them.
