Episcopal School of Baton Rouge is pleased to announce that Brent Broussard has been named the school’s next Athletic Director. Broussard’s career in education spans 18 years and includes time in the classroom, coaching and administration.

Since 2022, Broussard has served as the Woodlawn High School Athletic Director, managing an athletic department with 350 student athletes and 50 coaches and staff. During his tenure as athletic director, the Panthers athletics program expanded to include girls bowling, golf, and girls and boys wrestling. The Panthers recently celebrated success in girls basketball with state runner-up finishes for the first time in school history, individual state champions in girls powerlifting, and a state runner-up title and four individual state champions in boys powerlifting. Since 2013, Broussard has also served as the Woodlawn High School Dean of Students, assisting administration with campus safety, safety drills, school transportation, facility issues and discipline.

Broussard has coached tennis, football, basketball and baseball. He was named the 2021/2022 NFHS Louisiana Tennis Coach of the Year. Broussard serves on the Executive Committees of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association, the Louisiana High School Coaches Association and the Louisiana High School Athletic Directors Association. He is the current President of the Louisiana High School Tennis Coaches Association. The National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association recently recognized Broussard as a Certified Athletic Administrator.

Broussard earned a Bachelor of Science from Louisiana State University, Ogden Honors College.

As he prepares to join the Knights, we asked Brent a few questions to help us get to know him better:

What about our school attracted you and made you want to apply?

What makes Episcopal unique is its commitment to excellence in academics, the arts, and athletics. The school's balanced approach to education focuses on the whole-student and allows students to be the best version of themselves. These values align perfectly with my personal values, so I was excited about the opportunity to apply. 

In your opinion, what is the most important thing that schools can do to support the growth and development of students?

In order to support the growth and development of students, schools must provide a safe learning environment that promotes the development of the whole child. The school should strive to be inclusive and to allow students to participate in athletics, arts, and other extracurricular activities, all while being challenged with a rigorous academic curriculum. The goal should be to support students while allowing them to find their passion and allow them to be the best version of themselves.

How do you plan to create a school culture that promotes academic and athletic excellence while also promoting social-emotional well-being among students?

I believe that the school culture at Episcopal is strong and well-defined, shaped by the school's mission. However, to continue to strengthen culture, there must be buy-in from multiple groups within the community. To achieve that buy-in, teachers, coaches, administrators, students, and families should be a part of the process to shape the vision for the culture and set shared goals that integrate academics and athletics. We must prioritize Social-Emotional Learning by balancing academics, athletics, arts, and students' social lives, and stress the importance of mental health. Finally, student-athletes should continue to have input by introducing leadership panels to have a voice in the vision and culture of the Athletic Department. To maintain the culture, it is important that students and coaches feel valued, respected, and supported. Trust is the foundation of that support. Being visible, accessible, and following through on commitments will help to build the trust and credibility to lead effectively.

How do you plan to support the professional development and growth of coaches and staff?

To support the professional development of coaches and staff, I must meet individually with coaches to understand their strengths, areas for growth, and professional development interests to effectively provide relevant professional growth opportunities. I would like to provide professional development focusing on Social-Emotional Learning, inclusion, mental health, leadership, communication, and coaching best-practices. I would also serve as a liaison between school administration and the coaching staff to reiterate the school's mission and shared goals. It is important to encourage regular self-reflections as well as provide constructive feedback based on observations. Finally, I would provide clear, consistent communication to support our staff, set and track goals, provide recognition, and foster a positive culture of self-improvement.
