As the second longest-running show on Broadway, “Chicago” is well known worldwide. Theatre Production Director Lily McGill says that mass appeal was a big part of choosing the musical for the Upper School spring production. She says the team always considers what will fill the 450-seat theater space and what will present well on the VPAC stage. With dancing, singing, glitzy costumes, a true crime theme and a 12-piece professional orchestra, “Chicago” is sure to fill the house.
Fifty-two Middle and Upper School students will dazzle audiences with the play that McGill says feels similar to “Chicago” the movie. McGill is thrilled that more than a 1/3 of the student actors are new to theater. “A bunch of seniors are doing the show for the first time,” she says. She says having new performers creates new friendships and opportunities for students to learn from one another. “They’re learning that everyone has a strength,” says McGill. “This has been such a good experience for all of them.”

Presenting a musical takes significant commitment from students and teachers, with long hours and numerous rehearsals. McGill says the group began rehearsing the last week of January and has been hard at work since. As is often the case, these high-achieving students are successfully juggling theater, academics and numerous other activities. In addition to McGill, students are supported by dance teacher Christine Chrest, choir director Carrie Poynot and lighting designer/art department chair Louis Gagliano.
With such a talented team, you won’t want to miss “Chicago: Teen Edition” on the VPAC stage. Get your tickets today!
