Episcopal Theater Presents "Anything Goes"
March 23rd, 2023

The Visual & Performing Arts Center stage has transformed into an ocean liner en route from New York to London. The dramatic scene sets the tone for the upcoming presentation of the Broadway classic “Anything Goes.” Theater Director Lily McGill says the story is a “rom-com with lots of hijinks,” and while it was first presented in 1934, “Anything Goes” maintains its appeal. “It’s a classic musical,” says McGill. “It’s almost 100 years old, but it’s been revived over and over again. It’s impressive that it stays relevant.”
Student thespians in the year 2023 are well prepared to present this classic. McGill says she and a group of students began considering options for a spring production last fall. The team was looking for a good mix of what students wanted to do and what was possible. “I want them to feel really confident and kill it,” says McGill. “This is really doable while showing the students’ talents.”

The collective talents of the Episcopal community will be on full display for “Anything Goes.” Dance teacher Christine Chrest choreographed dance scenes that are sure to wow audiences. McGill says the production features a huge tap dance number that requires many of the students to learn the dance style for the first time. In addition, musical director Carrie Poynot will conduct the orchestra and has taught all of the music to the students. As is traditionally the case, the ocean liner set was designed and built by Arts Department Director Louis Gagliano and his technical theater class students.

Once the curtain falls on “Anything Goes,” McGill and the students will focus again on the upcoming International Thespian Festival in Indiana this summer. Good luck!
