This year’s Valedictorian is Arya Patel. Arya has made the most of her experience as a Knight since coming to Episcopal in the first grade. She conducted university-level research in the Episcopal Students Taking Action in Advanced Research (ESTAAR) program and won first place in the Junior Humanities and Science Symposium poster competition. She participated in FRAME and wind ensemble. She led the Junior Classical League Club and was co-editor-in-chief of this year’s “Troubadour.” She was also the driving force behind the establishment of the Upper School Science Olympiad team. Beyond Episcopal, she is a classical dancer, an LSU Math Circle participant, and the EKAM state volunteer coordinator, where she organized fundraisers for local and international health initiatives. 

This fall, Arya will attend Case Western Reserve University as a neuroscience major. She has been accepted into the school’s prestigious Pre-Professional Scholars Program in Medicine. We asked Arya about the next step in her educational journey and her Episcopal experience.

Arya played a pivotal role in establishing the Episcopal Science Olympiad team.

1. Why did you choose Case Western?

I primarily chose Case Western because I got the opportunity to be a part of its Pre-Professional Scholars Program. Going to Case Western gives me access to many top-notch research and clinical facilities in the Cleveland medical hub, including the Cleveland Clinic. I also appreciate Case's small class sizes and its rigorous courses that will keep me engaged as a student. I also fell in love with Case's medical school because of its new integrated curriculum of medicine and public health awareness and its innovative Health Education Campus.

2. Being chosen for the Pre-Professional Scholars Program is a tremendous honor. How do you feel about being selected?

Knowing the program's competitiveness, I am very grateful to be selected for this opportunity. This program allows me to get closer to my dream of being a physician-scholar who is active in science, practice, and health care policy. Without the requirement of the MCAT and the stress of the medical school application process, I can use my undergrad experience to focus more on continuing my research endeavors in the immunology field, service, and community. Additionally, I have the space to pursue a master's in public health before starting medical school.

3. What does it mean to you to be the Class of 2022 Valedictorian?

It feels rewarding. It's a nice encouragement to help me continue striving toward my goals.

4. What are you most proud of as far as your achievements?

Overall in my school career, I am most proud of my service leadership work as a coordinator for the EKAM USA foundation, which allowed me to work towards providing quality health care for many children in need. As for my in-school experiences, I am most proud of my work with ESTAAR and research competitions, as well as getting a Science Olympiad team started at this school. 

As far as classroom experiences, Arya had this to say regarding her achievements.

I am most proud of the diligence, determination, and work ethic that I was able to develop through learning in academically rigorous classes and encouraging environments.
