Knightly News

Last week, the Episcopal school and alumni community reveled in all of the Homecoming activities that make this week so special.  As an employee, alumni and current parent, “coming home” means so much to me and my family.  To experience Episcopal again through the eyes of my children is truly a special experience. I remember decorating the quad, Homecoming pep rallies and my first Homecoming dance in the Greer Center.  This year's Homecoming activities engaged our alumni in many meaningful ways. I hope others experienced a similar feeling of coming home and reliving the memories and traditions that we all love about Episcopal.

Sharing a Story

We welcomed back 12 alumni to read stories to our littlest Knights. Sara Gomez, Lower School librarian, explained the meaning of the word alumni and the sense of love and connectedness these graduates feel for our amazing community. She encouraged our Knights to always keep Episcopal forever in their hearts. Each reader shared fun photos, yearbooks and memorabilia from their time at Episcopal and answered many wonderful, silly and precious questions about their Episcopal experience.  With enthusiasm, our alumni then read a Knight-inspired story to further the spirit of Homecoming.  We can’t wait for these little Knights to one day be alumni and return to campus to continue this tradition.

5th and 50th Project

Our Class of 1972 celebrated their 50th High School Reunion this year.  They expanded their celebration to include the Class of 1971 and the Class of 1973.  This wonderful group of three graduating classes returned to campus for our first-ever “5th and 50th“ project.  Nicole Engstrom, Episcopal 5th grade teacher, had the 5th grade students interview these wonderful alumni guests, along with several alumni friends and grandparents.  Nicole reminded students that our mature adults are like libraries full of stories and it is an honor to capture and listen to their memories.  It was powerful to witness the Class of 2030 interacting with some of the first Episcopal graduates. Our alumni were gracious in sharing their memories, the themes of their lives, and they even answered some really fun and challenging questions. It was great to watch these communities UKNIGHT. 

It was a joy to watch brothers John and Chris White (‘72 & ‘73) teaching old Episcopal football plays to their 5th grade partners. We hope these plays will help them in their final flag football games!  The 5th and 50th project continued with a campus tour and cafeteria lunch. While the campus looked a lot different 50 years ago, it was obvious the alumni memories were still strong. Like classes before and after them, they reminisced about friendships, teachers, sporting events and the wonderful education that prepared them for college and a successful 50 years since graduation.  For example, Maury Lewis Hawking ‘72 shared that she tested out of two years of classes at LSU when she graduated Episcopal. Beverly Gladney Buckingham ‘72, whose grandfather A. Hayes Towne designed several Episcopal buildings, still remembers starting the first Hi-Steppers dance team. Episcopal provided a one-of-a-kind education for these first classes. We so hope our first graduates will always feel like Episcopal is home and continue to come back.  Your stories are treasured and represent so much of why we are here today.  Thank you!

Food, Football and Friends

We welcomed over 300 alumni and families to the Episcopal Field House for food, football and friends as the Knights hosted the annual Homecoming game.  In addition to our 50th reunion classes, we also celebrated reunions for the classes of 1992, 1997 and 2012. It was amazing seeing so many alumni gathering to REUKNIGHT.  My class celebrated their 25th reunion, and we were so touched to be able to share in the retirement of our classmate Jimmy Williams ’97 jersey.  As we remembered Jimmy, we all recognized the bond we so strongly value today means more than we ever knew it would years ago.  These friendships are special. Episcopal provided the space for us to grow and learn and sharing these memories helps us stay connected to our Episcopal community. Thank you to everyone that came out Friday night and helped celebrate a wonderful Homecoming.  We loved having you and hope to see you again really soon!  

Homecoming is a special time. Episcopal is a special place.  We have so many amazing alumni that we want to have back on campus and be a part of the Episcopal experience in whatever way possible.  Come back to campus, share your stories, impact a student, engage with old friends and maybe make a new friend in the process.   We hope to continue these opportunities for our alumni to get involved and be a part of the history and memories Episcopal continues to create.
