With artificial intelligence, games, apps, messaging and more, technology in 2025 evolves quickly. The Episcopal Parents’ Guild and the school counseling team are pleased to help Episcopal parents/caregivers learn more about online and tech safety at the upcoming presentation, "Digital Discernment: Creating a Tech-Ready Home in an AI Age," on Tuesday, October 28th, from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm in the Visual & Performing Arts Center. The informational session will be presented by Doug Crawford, Chief Presentation Officer with the national organization Protect Young Eyes.

Online Safety Tips Now Include AI Safety Suggestions

During the parent presentation, families can expect to learn about the impacts of technology on young, developing brains, how to use hardware and software to protect children, and how to create a prepared, balanced and protected online environment for their family. Upper School Counselor Kristen Wilcox says the Protect Young Eyes group offers pro-tech, practical resources that parents can use. They also provide tips for having age-appropriate conversations with children regarding online safety.

Wilcox is most excited for families to learn more about AI, which is a new topic in the digital discernment presentation this year. She says with AI being so new to many families, it is a tremendous benefit to have someone with expertise in the area share safety tips. She also appreciates that Protect Young Eyes relies on up-to-date research and information to help families stay informed about the rapid development.

Empowering Students/Helping Families

Wilcox, Middle School Counselor Katie Carpenter and Lower School Counselor Megan Lofland appreciate the opportunity to bring in another voice to speak with students about online safety. “They hear us all day long, so they’ll hear it differently from someone else,” says Wilcox. Wilcox says the student presentations are age-appropriate and designed to empower students to keep themselves safe and to inform them on what to do if something feels uncomfortable.

Counseling role aside, Wilcox appreciates the knowledge offered by Protect Young Eyes. “As a mom, it’s huge,” she says. “We’re often so busy juggling and managing so many things in life that it’s helpful to have a dependable resource where we can learn more.” The hope is that Episcopal families and students benefit from the upcoming presentation and learn additional tools for online safety.

Protect Young Eyes has presented digital wellness education sessions to more than 250,000 students. Their experts worked with 349 different groups of parents, students and professionals during the 2024/2025 school year. The group’s website states that, “We help families, schools, and churches create safer digital spaces.”
