With STEAM Knight quickly approaching, we get to know a teacher with a special connection to the subject. As QUEST Center Coordinator, Stacy Hill uses a range of STEAM activities that inspire students and enhance learning. STEAM Knight is scheduled for Thursday, November 13th, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Lower and Middle School families will meet in the VPAC and disperse for demonstrations in the Reilly Academic Commons, the Lower School Greer Center and the QUEST Center in Foster Hall, where they are sure to see Mrs. Hill.

Becoming a Better Human

QUEST Center Coordinator Stacy Hill is a veteran educator with nearly three decades of experience in the classroom, curriculum development and STEAM inspiration. After so long in the field, you might think that she always wanted to be a teacher; however, that’s not the case.

“I never played school,” Hill recalls of her childhood. While her little sister played school, Hill played sports, specifically softball, volleyball and basketball. She loved basketball so much that she went on to play point guard for Millsaps College. Unfortunately, after a broken collarbone and a torn meniscus, it was time to tag out.

Hill says playing sports made her a “better human” and a “better competitor.” With that in mind, she dreamed of becoming a physical therapist because she wanted to help others get back in the game. She majored in biology and pursued education credits while working toward PT school. Teaching and coaching were her backup until she taught a lesson on PowerPoint.

Finding a Calling

Early in her college career, Hill was assigned to teach fifth graders how to use PowerPoint. “This is when PowerPoint was brand new,” she laughs. Hill learned as much that day as the students she taught. Teaching was her calling. “When I did it, I was like, I love this,” she recalls. “I had to change my course of action.”  

With an athletic background and a competitive spirit, Hill eventually taught high school science and served as assistant basketball coach and volleyball coach at Redemptorist High School. Later, she would develop curriculum and instruction for East Baton Rouge Parish and work with gifted middle school students at Glasgow Middle School. Her interactive, engaging teaching style caught the attention of Episcopal, and she eventually joined the school, where she has been for 11 years.

Sharing a Love for Experiential Learning

When recalling her own science education, Hill remembers the lessons where she and her classmates did something. After all this time, she remembers maintaining the ecosystem of an aquarium, building models and conducting chemistry experiments. The lessons certainly stuck, and now she shares similar experiences with students of all ages in a space meant to inspire wonder and discovery.

Hill enjoys guiding students through QUEST Center experiences. While she still loves Middle School, she says she also loves being with the little ones. “They are in awe and so excited about anything they do in this building,” she says. “Everything is miraculous and amazing. Most days, I’m like, ‘Wow, that was really great. Look what this kid did.'”

Hill looks forward to the upcoming STEAM Knight event and sees it as an opportunity to share that same awe and excitement with Episcopal families. This special event will celebrate everything STEAM with exciting demonstrations presented by Episcopal teachers.
