Sophia Macias Signs with Tulane
November 12th, 2024

“At the end of the day, it’s just a sport, and it doesn’t define me as a person, but it has made me who I am.” Sophia Macias
Sophia Macias played in her first golf tournament at the age of six. Since that time, she has been a force on the junior circuit, and she’ll continue competing for Tulane University next year. “Golf has given me so many opportunities and taught me a lot about myself,” says Sophia. “I have never played a perfect round of golf, and I never will, but that’s what makes it so special. I love golf because it’s shaped the way I approach life and taught me the value of persistence.”
Finding the Right Fit
Sophia says the recruiting process can be stressful. “As much as you want to believe there’s no pressure, the reality is for eight months, hundreds of coaches have been watching every short and following every leaderboard,” she says. “All of a sudden, fairways look a little smaller, and five-foot putts seem further away.” She looks forward to playing for the Green Wave now that her decision has been made. “I got a chance to meet Coach Kay and Coach Warren in November of last year, and soon after, I was on campus for a visit,” says Sophia. “I quickly realized everything was going to be okay, I had found a school and a program that I truly wanted to be part of. I am very thankful for the opportunity to receive an amazing education from Tulane, and I am extremely excited to be part of such a special golf program.”
When asked what advice she’d give to classmates with a goal to continue competing, she had a thoughtful answer. “Win or lose, you go home to the same person; nothing changes. You’re worth more than your ability to perform, so enjoy the highs and appreciate the lows.”

Celebrating Success
Sophia has been a leader in the Episcopal golf program for some time. She begins her senior season as the defending state champion. On signing day, her coaches described her as welcoming, driven, meticulous and humble. “It’s been a blessing for our golf team to have Sophia involved,” says Athletic Director Randy Richard. Head golf coach Steve Baronich says he’s looking forward to seeing what Sophia does in her senior year. “She’s been a pleasure to coach,” he says.
In addition to golf, Sophia also competes as a member of the Knights powerlifting team. Head coach Mark Harper says the weight room has helped her golf game. “I feel blessed that I’ve seen the maturation of Sophia,” says Harper.
Congratulations to a Champion
Like her coaches, Knights fans have enjoyed cheering Sophia on and will likely continue to follow her journey at Tulane. Join us in congratulating her on the exciting opportunity ahead.
