Episcopal student actors will transport audiences back to 1950’s small town America when they present “Picnic” November 19 – 22. This two-hour, PG-13 rated drama features a cast of 21 Upper School student actors. Theatre Production Director Lily McGill says the drama unfolds when “a handsome young man comes into town.” She says the play examines how Hal Carter’s appearance impacts women in different stages of life. “We take a look at womanhood and the ups and downs of being a woman,” says McGill.

McGill says students read “Picnic” last year as a class exercise and “really liked the story.” Filled with first crushes, wistful flirting, and the pull between money and love, the play presents topics students are eager to explore.

A Sign of Growth

McGill was pleasantly surprised that more students auditioned for the play than expected. “It’s a sign of growth in our program that so many kids are interested in doing both shows,” she says of the students participating in the non-musical play and the school musical. She says the play also offers students an opportunity to work on different acting skills and show another side of themselves. As a result of the interest, “Picnic” is double cast, and McGill says both casts are incredibly solid. In addition to performing for the Episcopal community, “Picnic” will also be Episcopal’s entry into this year’s Louisiana Thespian Festival. Last year, Episcopal Troupe 88800 was quite successful at state and ultimately went on to perform on the Main Stage at the International Thespian Festival.

“Picnic” will be performed in the Visual & Performing Arts Center Black Box Theatre. McGill says she has always enjoyed black box productions because of the energy created when the audience and actors are in such close proximity. She points out that, as expected in smaller settings, the actors will not use microphones. A mic-less performance eliminates equipment variables, and McGill says it also prepares the actors for future productions.
